Scope

The result of image segmentation is a set of segments that collectively cover the entire image, or a set of contours extracted from the image (see edge detection). Each of the pixels in a region are similar with respect to some characteristic or computed property, such as color, intensity, or texture, motivating the use of clustering or other pattern recognition methods, including statistical image models, Markov random fields, color, texture, motion, combinatorial optimization, parameter estimation, variational and level set methods.
There are many application fields where these methods can be used and that relate well with this special session, such as medical imaging, face recognition, biometrics, traffic control systems, among others.
The special session on Advances in Image Segmentation is devoted to presenting and discussing the recent advances, the latest research results, and to identify and address emerging problems and challenges in image segmentation.
